Butler, Samuel. 1826-9 An Atlas of Modern Geography & Dr Butler's Antient Atlas . London: Longman, Rees, Brown, Orme, Brown, & Green. Comprised of two editions, one dated 1826 (1827), while the other contains a facsimile title page dated 1829. Likely an incorrect facsimile title page, as the index page reads "Dr. Butler's Antient Atlas." - Dr. Butler's Antient Atlas was published in 1826 (1827), at the same time as Butler's Modern Atlas.
The 1826 volume is complete with 22 maps, including those of the world, Europe, England, Asia, Africa, the United States, and many other countries. The 1829 volume contains 20 maps, including those entitled Orbis Veteribus Notus, Britannia, Hispania, Gallia, and others. The 1829 volume is lacking map XIII. Maps are double-paged and hand-coloured, apart from the map of the world, which is a large folding plate, also hand-coloured. Bound in half cloth with paper-covered boards. (2) Approx. 8.5" by 6" Externally, very good, with a few marks and areas of rubbing. Label missing to one volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright, with pencil markings to the odd page, slight offsetting and a few handling marks. Lacking one plate.
