Novels include first US editions of Last Respects (1982), Harm's Way (1984), and A Dead Liberty (1987), each of which features the author's much-loved characters, Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan and his sidekick, Detective Constable Crosby. Periodicals include Sturry: The Changing Scene (1973), Letters to Sturry (2003), Hersden: Cislet Colliery Village (2003), Broad Oak: A Kentish Village Reconsidered (2008), and Fordwich...the Lost Port (1975), all of which relate to Aird's hometown of Sturry, and neighbouring areas. Based in Kent, McIntosh wrote more than 30 novels and short stories, and edited and reviewed many other works. Known for her significant contributions in the "cozy crime" genre, McIntosh was welcomed into the prestigious Detection Club in 1981, joining the likes of Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, and G. K. Chesterton. In 2015, McIntosh was awarded both the Crime Writers Association Golden Handcuffs award for Lifetime Achievement and the Diamond Dagger award for her outstanding lifetime contribution to the genre. Additionally, McIntosh was a highly respected local historian and authored/edited a number of publications relating to the villages of Kent. She housed an impressive library at her home in Kent, comprised of countless detective novels, reference works and crime-related books, undoubtedly used as inspiration and research for her writing.
