Austen, Jane. 1895 Pride and Prejudic e. London: George Allen. Peacock edition, with illustrations by Hugh Thomson. With a preface by George Saintsbury. Second impression of the Peacock edition. Some of the illustrations have been hand-coloured.
The second Thomson edition, also known as the Peacock edition, was the first edition of Pride and Prejudice to contain illustrations throughout, with previous copies containing only a frontispiece. First published in this edition in October 1894, this copy is the second impression, printed in March 1895. Bound in the publisher's original gilt-decorated cloth with the iconic peacock design and a gilt edge. A bright example of this desirable edition of Austen's enduring love story. (1) Approx. 7.5" by 5" Externally, very good, with light bumping to extremities and the odd light mark. Front hinge tail is a little strained, holding firm. Pages are largely bright and clean, with the odd mark and spotting to end pages. Some of the illustrations have been coloured in with crayon.

Herbert, Frank. 1976 Children of Dune . Putnam's: New York. Signed first edition in red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in a pictorial orange and black dustwrapper illustrated by Vincent di Fate. Signed to the title page 'Frank Herbert'.
This edition is scarce due to the relatively small hardcover print run and is highly difficult to find today in pristine condition with an unclipped dustwrapper. It was the first science fiction hardback to appear on major best-seller lists, initially selling over 75,000 copies, and was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1977. (1) Book mesures approx 8.5" by 6" An excellent copy, with just light touches of wear to the spine ends of the dustwrapper, and very faint toning to the spine. A rare book, especially signed and in this condition, especially as Herbert did not orchestrate signing events for this books' release.

Rowling, J. K. 2000 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire . London: Bloomsbury Publishing. Signed, first edition. With a ticket for The Hogwarts Express Book Tour, granting admission to a book signing which took place at Didcot Railway Centre on Saturday, 8th July. An excellent signed copy of J. K. Rowling's fourth novel from her celebrated fantasy series. Complete with the publisher's unclipped dust wrapper.
On 8th July, 2000, J. K. Rowling commenced the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire "Hogwarts Express Book Tour", which departed from King's Cross station and made its first official stop at Didcot Railway Centre in Oxfordshire. Fans who had purchased the first copies available of the book that day were also given a "Golden Ticket" to the signing event, which is included with this copy. (1) Approx. 8" by 5" In the pub. pictorial boards, with the unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with minor shelf wear only. Dust wrapper is also excellent, with a few small marks to the front panel. Internally, firmly bound with bright, clean pages. Signed to half title.

1842 Narrative of the Loss of the Mary Rose, At Spithead, July 20, 1545, From Original Manuscripts . Portsea: S. Horsey. First edition. Scarce and important publication relating to the last battle and sinking of the Mary Rose off Spithead in 1545. A neat copy.
Noted to have been bound using wood from the ship itself, with a small clipping to the front blank stating The Wood from which the covers of this book are made was purchased Nov, 12 1840, at Mr. Dean's Public Sale of Articles, recovered by him from the Mary Rose...". On November 12, 1840, pieces of this recovered timber were sold at public auction in Portsmouth. Diver John Deane was the seller of the salvaged oak timbers and main mast segments recovered from Henry VIII's sunken flagship. Approx. 3.5" by 2" With wooden boards and a leather spine. Gilt edge. Externally, very good, with rubbing to spine. A little loss to rear endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.

A circa 16th/17th century Bible, known as the "Breeches Bible" due to the quote: "...and they sewed figge tree leaves together and made themselves breeches" found in Genesis III, 7. A scarce early copy of this important Bible, with this copy containing the Psalter, or Psalms of David, the Old Testament, and the Apocrypha. Lacking in places, including the title page. Header page for the Psalter states the publishing information as Christopher Barker, London, printer to the Queenes Maiestie. Bound in full calf, c.19th century binding, with renewed endpapers. Inscription to endpapers dated 1889.

Cii-Ciiii , containing sections on The visitation of the sicke , The Communion of the sicke , At the Burial of the Dead , and A Commination . Lacking pages before Cii, including title page.

Approx. 9.5" by 7" Bound in full calf, externally worn, with both boards detached. Rubbing to leather. Endpapers renewed. Ink notation to ffep. Internally, textblock firmly bound. Pages discoloured in places, with areas of damp staining. Loss to some leaves, more significant to p3-29, occasionally affecting text. Some leaves are slightly closely trimmed to the head.

West, Nathanael. 1933 Miss Lonelyhearts . Liveright: New York. First edition, first issue in original tan cloth with black printed title label with silver lettering on the spine. Facsimile jacket present. A bright copy of West's satirical novel set in Depression-era New York.
A scarce work, reputedly being one of 800 copies. The publisher, Liveright, went bankrupt just as the book was published, and then refused to release around 1400 copies of the original print run, so many bookshops were unable to source copies to sell. The 1400 copies were later issued by Harcourt, Brace, and Co. (1) Book measures approx 8" by 5.5" A very good copy with some faint staining to the boards, and rubbing to the title label. A few marks to the end papers but internally tight and fresh.

Design mirrored on rear panel. Price on inside front panel stated $6.95.

Mario Puzo was an up-and-coming writer with $20,000 in gambling debt. He deliberately set out to write a commercial "pulp" bestseller entirely to make money. Puzo carefully mapped out the complex, multi-part novel on six large storyboards, and his working title for the manuscript was 'Mafia'. It was immediately successful, triggering a record-shattering paperback rights auction and catching the sudden, urgent attention of Hollywood studios. Book measures approx 8.5" by 6" A very good copy indeed with some light water stains to the back panel in a very good dustwrapper that remains unfaded, with wear to the corners and spine ends. The spine ends sustaining some short closed tears and some chips. Very light toning to the spine.

Tolkien, J.R.R. 1967 The Hobbit . Allen & Unwin: London. Third edition, seventeenth impression. In green cloth with navy lettering and wrap-around design, in unclipped pictorial dustwrapper. Red and black illustrated endpapers and colour frontispiece; all artwork featured in early printings of the books was by Tolkien. A handsome copy that has retained the bright colours. Book measures approx 7.5" by 5" A very good copy indeed with some slight tanning to the spine and top edge. Internally, the pages are bright and binding is tight. The dust wrapper is unclipped; it has touches of wear to the corners and spine ends, including a tear to the front flyleaf head, with some very minor tanning to the spine, but is bright, with the blue and green colours rich and unfaded. Previous owner's name neatly on verso of the free front end paper.

Forster, E.M. 1910 Howards End . Edward Arnold: London. First edition, second issue in original red cloth with gilt lettering to the upper cover and spine. Eight leaves of advertisements present at rear of book.
In Edwardian England, Forster used clashing social classes to show how traditional views met modern change. Through diverse life experiences, he proved that different people bridge the past with the present. His famous phrase, "Only connect," urges individuals to link their inner personal lives with the outer public world. (1)

A beautiful example of the final period of ornate giftbooks during the interwar period. These richy decorated and illustrated books usually given at Christmas. Book measures approx 9" by 7" The book is in excellent condition, with a few spots to the lower cover and some bumps to the top of the upper board, but the gilt has remained bright and the book handsome. Slight spotting to the page edges, but internally clean and bright. Rear endpaper has been excised.

A posthumous collaboration between Derleth & Lovecraft's unfinished sections of notes and writing. The dustwrapper is particularly rare, with price stated as 8/6 net. Book measures approx 7.5" by 5" A very good copy indeed with slight toning to the page edges, and light spotting to the first and last couple of pages. In a very good dustwrapper with fading to the spine and wear to the edges, rare found in this condition, not price-clipped.

By his Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. Oxford, Printed by John Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty, for Great Britain and the University . (John Baskett Vinegar Bible). With a separate title page for the New Testament, entitled The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ ..., dated 1716.
The Vinegar acquired its name from the misprint in the headline of Luke chapter 20, where it states 'The Parable of the Vinegar' instead of 'Vineyard'. It was renowned for its large, ornate pages, fine paper, and beautiful engraved illustrations, making it a visual masterpiece despite the misprint.
Collation: [16], A6-Qqqq3, [1], A6-Y4.
The first [16] pages contain sections on The Translatours to the Reader , and the Kalendar . Leaves A6-Qaaa3 contain the Old Testament, and A6-Y4 contains the New Testament, separated by its own title page.
(1) Approx 19" by 13" The front board has detached and is no longer present, but the text block of the bible remains intact. Rear board detached and backstrip loose to front joint. Tears to first few leaves, including title page and frontispiece. Tears to rear endpapers. Some leaves have been laid down, with slight loss to the extremities, including title page, front illustration, and first and last few leaves. Additional restorations throughout, mainly to the margins. Pages appear to have been washed, with faint spotting and the odd mark visible in places. Faint tide mark to the first few pages.

R., Westall R.A. 1825 The Arabian Nights illustrated with engravings . Four volumes in original blue card boards under a quarter tan cloth spine with paper title lables on the spine intact. Top edge cut, the rest uncut. Illustrated with frontispieces in every volume and c.7 additional full page plate engravings by Westall.
An extremely rare set, in original published state. The set was first published in 1819, with this edition following in 1825 with the same plates, rarely seen in original boards. (4) Books measures approx 7" by 5" All volumes have wear to the spines, especially the spine ends, with some areas of loss. The title lables remain intact to all four volumes, but are cracking with age.

Tolkien, J.R.R. 1960 The Lord of the Ring Trilogy. Reader's Union Edition. In original tan cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in their original light grey dustwrappers with the distinct image of Sauron's eye. All complete with fold-out maps at the rear.
Exclusively printed for listed subscribers, as opposed to general sale to the public. Limited to just under 3,000 copies in this single print run, and contains the original unrevised text prior to Tolkien's major 1966–1967 second-edition corrections.
(3) All books measure approx 9" by 6" The books are in excellent condition and still retain their original wrappers. Some neat tape repairs to the centre of The Fellowship . Some very light foxing to the endpapers. Fellowship also has some tape repairs to the front panel, and the other wrappers have worn spine ends with some tears, but all panels present on all jackets.

Gaskin, Arthur; Andersen, Hans Christian. 1983 Stories and Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen . George Allen: London. Two volumes bound in cream cloth with gilt lettering and decoration to the front panel and spine, also a small square of gilt to the lower panel. One of three hundred copies printed on large handmade paper. Illustrated throughout in black and white by Gaskin.
This edition was Gaskin's first major book illustration project and became his most commercially successful project. The critical acclaim and popularity from Gaskin's work on Hans Andersen led to him working directly with Morris's prestigious Kelmscott Press.
(2) Both books measure approx 10.5" by 8" A lovely set, with the expected tanning to the spines and edges of the boards and page edges. The gilt remains bright and internally the pages are bright and fresh. A rare publication. A few drips on the spine and some wear to the spine ends also.

A selection of scarce early 20th century Russian pamphlets and publications. To include a 1911 Russian edition of The Green Stick by Leo Tolstoy, published as No.1 in the "L. N. Tolstoy's Library" series, and a 1946 Soviet edition of Tolstoy's Kavkazskij Plennik [Prisoner of the Caucasus] , published by Detgiz, a children's literature publishing house. With a 1944 children's edition of the poem Borodino, written by Mikhail Lermontov, with illustrations by Nikolai Kuzmin. Together with two Russian Orthodox journals, including a 1946 issue of Spiritual Conversations, and a 1950 issue of the Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate, the latter being the official monthly periodical of the Russian Orthodox Church, which was revived in 1943 during the Second World War. (6) From a collection of rare Russian books and publications. Signed by the author to her husband and fellow poet, Sergey Efron. With the inscription "To Sergey Efron - my constant and noble companion. Marina Tsvetaeva. Vsenory, near Prague, 7th May 1925". Tsvetaeva and Efron met at Koktebel, a well-known haven for artists, and married in 1912. Efron joined the anti-Bolshevik movement, the White Army, and the pair moved back to Moscow in 1917. After years of famine and struggle, Tsvetaeva eventually reached Berlin in 1922, where she was reunited with Efron, whom she thought had been killed. They returned to Moscow in 1939, where Efron and their daughter, Ariadna, were immediately arrested on espionage charges, leading to Efron's execution. Molodets, or The Swain, was written and published during the author's emigre years, living in Berlin and Prague in the 1920s, following her exile from Russia in 1922. * Anna Andreyevna Gorenko, known under her pseudonym Anna Akhmatova, was a leading poet in Russia in the early 20th century, notable for choosing to stay in the Soviet Union to act as a witness to the events around her, despite being censored by Stalinist authorities. Akhmatova was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965 and 1966. Anno Domini was written partly as a poetic lament in response to the death of the author's first husband, Gumilev, who was executed by the Soviets in the summer of 1921; this publication marks a noted shift from the more romantic style of her previous works.

An important publication, Ognenny Stolp was Gumilev's final work published during his lifetime, released just before he was executed in August 1921. Chukovsky, Korney. 1926 Moydodyr [Wash-'em-Clean] . Published by Khronos. Very scarce early edition. First published in 1923. Together with an early, lifetime edition of Telephone (1934), also by Chukovsky, featuring illustrations from one of the leading Soviet designers of children’s books, Vladimir Konashevich. This 1934 edition of Telephone was the first edition to contain Konashevich's illustrations, appearing in black-and-white, including the drawing of a hare using a rotating phone dial on the title page. In the subsequent 1938 edition, colour was added, and the hare drawing was moved to the front cover. Bound in the publisher's original wraps. 16pp. to Telephone and 24pp. to Moydodyr, continuous pagination.
Moydodyr was Chukovsky's popular Russian fairy tale, exploring the importance of hygiene. The story follows a young boy who does not want to wash until he is confronted and chased by an anthropomorphic washstand. Miller, Henry 1961 The Tropic of Cancer Grove: USA. First US edition, in original black cloth with silver lettering to the spine, in cobalt blue dustwrapper. Pink silk page marker present. $7.50 on the dustwrapper.
Originally published in Paris in 1934 and subsequently banned for its explicit sexual and bohemian themes, the book is seen as redefining censorship laws around the world for literature. After nearly thirty years of smuggler-only access in the United States, Grove Press offered Miller a large sum to print the book legally on American soil. American police subsequently stormed bookshops to remove this publication, therefore making it a rare find in this condition. Book measures approx 8" by 5.5" An excellent copy with fading to the spine and some slight wrinkling to the cloth, with the dustwrapper remaining bright with some wear to the edges, including a few small pieces of loss to the head of the spine. The jacket is bright, and internally the pages are bright.

Renowned for its criticism of capitalism, the book is considered a foundational dystopian novel. It challenged the dreamy utopian futures with a harrowing corporate-state nightmare, which would later inspire classics including George Orwell's 1984, and Huxley's Brave New World . Book measures approx 8" by 5" A good copy of this rare first printing that has some wear and rubbing to the spine. Internally a little loose, with some neat, clear tape around the hinges as they are splitting. The red cloth is quite tired and brown, but the pages interally seem clean.

Milton, John 1707 Paradise Lost. London: Jacob Tonson. Eighth edition. Bound in tan leather with gilt lettering on the spine. A pleasant modern binding to this incredibly rare early printing of Paradise Lost . Illustrated with engraved plates. Book measures 7.5" by 5" The binding is modern and has sustained some patches of light fading and scratching. Internally, the original leaves have been maintained, with the pages not additionally cut. The pages are clean and uniform.

London, Jack 1903 The Call of the Wild. New York: The Macmillan Company. First edition, first issue in green vertically ribbed cloth with upper cover featuring decorations stamped in red, white, black, and gold gilt lettering. With one leaf of adverts at the rear of the book and 'set up, electrotyped, and published July, 1903' on the copyright page. Illustrated throughout by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. Lacking three illustrations and a few leaves.
London wrote The Call of the Wild based on his semi-autobiographical experience of the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon in 1897. Book measures approx 7.5" by 5" The book has sustained loss to the colour stamping to the front board. There is bumping and wear to the spine ends and corners. A small pinhole mark to the spine. Internally clean with a neat gift inscription to the title page for chapter one. Generally firmly bound, leaves missing between p48-55, p94-95 and p126-129, incuding three illustrations. Portion of dust wrapper adhered to front blank.

An interesting publication, four years after the Bristol Riots. The unrest was part of a wider nationwide wave of reform riots. They resulted in approximately £300,000 worth of damage and up to 250 casualties. The riots were caused by the House of Lords rejecting the Second Reform Bill, which denied the vote to the majority of citizens, and the provocative arrival of Sir Charles Wetherell, an outspoken opponent of the reform. Approx. 16" by 11" A rare copy of this title, with the front board and ffep detached but pages present. Tear to the rear joint, textblock otherwise generally firm. Ink note to tile apge.
