The Ronald Wolfe Collection - It's A Deal! (BBC Radio sitcom 1960 starring Sid James) - an archive of development material for 'It's A Deal', along with a production used rehearsal script. The collection includes: a 9pp '1st Draft' rough typed script on typing paper, appearing to be complete but noticeably shorter than would have been required. Some amendments in Wolfe's hand. a further 9pp '1st Draft' for 'S. James Radio Show' differing from the aforementioned, with some amendments in Wolfe's hand. a third 9pp '1st Draft' rough script identical to the above, annotated in Ronald Chesney's hand. several loose script pages / typed documents with plot ideas, rough drafts of scenes etc. All on typing paper. a typed sheet showing the rough storyline for the series a longer incomplete rough draft script (lacking the first 11 pages - the correct dialogue can likely be found in the assorted pages also included, but page numbers do not tally) a master typed rough draft of one scene 'Office' plus two pages of handwritten notes in Wolfe's hand. an original 'finished' BBC rehearsal / recording script, lacking the cover but otherwise complete at 44pp (See Lot 105) 'It's A Deal' appears to have been hastily created and reworked several times, hence the many drafts and re-drafts present. A unique archive of Sid James related material. Housed within a card folder. Note: In 1960 James parted ways with Tony Hancock, and effectively became a 'name for hire'. Several writers scrambled to come up with vehicles for him, and Wolfe and Chesney won with 'It's A Deal!' James - playing a version of himself ala Hancock's Half Hour - lives in London as a property developer. The series revolves around his various dealings in this line of work. June Whitfield and Wallas Eaton were regular cast members, with others appearing semi-regularly. 13 episodes were made. Ronald Wolfe (1922-2011) was a British television, radio and cinema screenwriter, and one half of the Ronald Wolfe and Ronald Chesney writing partnership. Wolfe wrote for some of the biggest stars in Britain from the 1950s to the 1990s, and had major success with the sitcoms The Rag Trade, Meet The Wife and On The Buses. In later life he taught comedy writing at City University, London. He passed away in 2011. Early pieces of British comedy memorabilia. Educating Archie was a BBC Light Programme comedy show which was broadcast for nearly ten years between June 1950 and February 1960. The programme featured ventriloquist Peter Brough and his doll Archie Andrews. The show was very popular, despite its unlikely central premise of a ventriloquist act on radio. Educating Archie averaged 15 million listeners, and a fan club boasted 250,000 members. It was so successful that in 1950, after only four months on the air, it won the Daily Mail's Variety Award. The programme introduced comedians who later became well known, including Tony Hancock as Archie's tutor, Benny Hill, Harry Secombe, Dick Emery, Bernard Bresslaw, Hattie Jacques, and Bruce Forsyth – together with a young Julie Andrews as Archie's girlfriend. Later, Beryl Reid took this role, playing the St Trinian's School-esque Monica. Ronald Wolfe first met Ronald Chesney during this programme. Chesney was a harmonica player and featured in several episodes. The two men struck up a friendship, then a writing partnership, and the rest is history. The Ronald Wolfe Collection – Educating Archie (BBC Radio Programme 1950-1960) - two original production scripts. 'No.1' starring Beryl Reid, Ken Platt, Graham Stark, Ronald Chesney and James Robertson Justice. 32pp. Plus 'No.20' starring the same cast. 31pp. Both annotated throughout by Wolfe, and signed to the cover noting the scripts as his. Early pieces of British comedy memorabilia. Educating Archie was a BBC Light Programme comedy show which was broadcast for nearly ten years between June 1950 and February 1960. The programme featured ventriloquist Peter Brough and his doll Archie Andrews. The show was very popular, despite its unlikely central premise of a ventriloquist act on radio. Educating Archie averaged 15 million listeners, and a fan club boasted 250,000 members. It was so successful that in 1950, after only four months on the air, it won the Daily Mail's Variety Award. The programme introduced comedians who later became well known, including Tony Hancock as Archie's tutor, Benny Hill, Harry Secombe, Dick Emery, Bernard Bresslaw, Hattie Jacques, and Bruce Forsyth – together with a young Julie Andrews as Archie's girlfriend. Later, Beryl Reid took this role, playing the St Trinian's School-esque Monica. Ronald Wolfe first met Ronald Chesney during this programme. Chesney was a harmonica player and featured in several episodes. The two men struck up a friendship, then a writing partnership, and the rest is history. Ronald Wolfe (1922-2011) was a British television, radio and cinema screenwriter, and one half of the Ronald Wolfe and Ronald Chesney writing partnership. Wolfe wrote for some of the biggest stars in Britain from the 1950s to the 1990s, and had major success with the sitcoms The Rag Trade, Meet The Wife and On The Buses. In later life he taught comedy writing at City University, London. He passed away in 2011. The Sid Colin Collection - Peter Sellers - three letters from Sellers and the corresponding copy of a letter from Colin sent to Sellers, over a dispute about payment for a sketch. Sellers appears to have commissioned Colin to write a script for him, but then reneged on payment. 2nd Feb 1950 from Sellers ' ...regarding the ten guineas for the VBB script that you wrote for me, you know of course that I did not work this, and as my Mother rang you to confirm this, I feel Sid, that there must be some mistake...I sincerely hope that this won't make any difference to our friendship or any other work I might want you to do for me .' (signed by Sellers) 3rd Feb 1950 letter from Colin in response, ' ...I can't believe that you seriously expect me to accept the points you make in your letter as reason for releasing you from the obligation to pay for the script. Do you imagine that I can work for half a week on a script and then receive no payment at all for it?... When I read the stuff over to you on the phone you laughed like mad and seemed to be delighted... Then, following several days of silence and finally, when it is too late to revise anything, I receive a phone call from your mother saying that you did not intend to use it. The proper thing to do with have been to at least give me the opportunity to revise (it) or... completely rewrite...I venture to suggest that in no other professional dealings could an artiste presume to commission work and then escape the obligation of paying for it.... I shall in future refuse to do any work other than that commissioned by the BBC. ' Response from Sellers, 4th February 1950: ' ...I do see your argument, and I, having commissioned (sic) you to write a script you are entitled to be paid something for it. But, there is a great difference between having a script written and using it, and having a script written and not using it. I think you will find that it's the general practice is such cases...Afterall, if my tailor makes me a suit that doesn't fit, there is not the slightest obligation on me to pay for it. However, we don't want to fall out over this matter, so think it over, let me have a fair suggestion and I'll send you a cheque.' (signed by Sellers). A further response from Sellers dated 8th Feb simply reads ' Thanks for yours to hand, herewith enclosed script as requested .' The letter is unsigned. A somewhat unique collection of letters! Those from Sellers are on his headed stationery with the BBC address to top. Two signed, the third unsigned. (4) Sid Colin (1915–1989) was an English scriptwriter. He started as a guitarist with The Squadronaires before moving in to comedy. He created the successful TV sitcom ‘The Army Game’ (1957–1959). Colin often collaborated with fellow comedy writer Talbot Rothwell, notably co-writing the film ‘Carry On Spying’ (1964). During his career he wrote for many of the country’s biggest stars including Frankie Howerd, Peter Sellers, Hattie Jacques, Max Bygraves and many others. He passed away in 1989.
