A maritime Dutch East India Company V.O.C. (Vereenigde Oost-indische Compagnie ) silver ingot bar 1739. The silver ingot was salvaged from the shipwreck of the Rooswijk in 2004. The ingot having V.O.C conjoined stamp with A for Amsterdam, together with assay masters stamp of a rampant goat. Measures approx. 3.2cm x 6.2cm x 3.9cm. Weight approx. 1300grms, 46.0 oz, 0.00127946 dwt. Salvage tag number: RK04A0314 Notes: The Rooswijk, a VOC (Vereenigde Oost-indische Compagnie) ship was built in 1737. The Rooswijk sank on the second trip. On the 9th January 1740, whilst on a voyage from Texel (in the Netherlands) to Batavia it faced a storm that left no survivors. There were 237 crew members, and an unknown number of passengers that lost their lives and many chests full of coins and silver ingots that sank to the bottom of the water. The Rooswijk sank on the Goodwin sands off the coast of Kent, a notoriously treacherous stretch of water, where the sands constantly shift with the tides making them hard to navigate. Many ships have been wrecked there. In January 1740, a chest full of letters and the crew’s personal effects washed ashore. The English government realised that the ship had sunk to the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Kent. These letters were the last words written before the Rooswijk sank. In December 2004, the sands that had swallowed the wreck of the Rooswijk changed in such a way that they allowed amateur diver Ken Welling to find the treasure of the Rooswijk. The recovery was made public in 2005. Organised by the Dutch and British governments and the scientific expedition was led by Rex Cowan.The cargo was primarily in the form of silver ingots and “coins of eight,” Mexican Reales from the 1720s and 1730s. The Dutch had little to offer in Asia but silver and gold. Therefore VOC ships had to sail to Asia with silver bars and gold coins to pay for Asian goods. The bars were cast in private factories, run by assayers, from melted-down silver coins, mainly Spanish American “Reales”. Once in Asia, these bars were melted down again and minted into coins and silver objects that could be used to pay for purchases in the East. Some of the dive team were given silver ingots salvaged from the wreckage as payment for their work.

Meissen porcelain - a 19th & 20th century composite porcelain anthropomorphic monkey band suite of twenty figurines / players. After the original models by J. J. Kaendler and P. Reinicke. Marks for Meissen dated between 1815 and 1945. Comprising: conductor, bagpipe player, cellist, drum & pipe player, a monkey with drums on his back, a monkey with drumsticks, a flautist, a French Horn player, a guitarist, a harpist, a hurdy-gurdy player, three singers, an oboeist, a pianist, a pipe player, a triangle player, a trumpet player & a violinist. Each mounted on gilt scrolled base. Various marks to underside incl. underglaze blue crossed swords, some painted marks, some impressed marks. Conductor : lacking separate music stand. Repaired historic chip of approx. 1cm wide to base, visible when figure standing. Very small nick to cuff of his left hand. Hairline to underside of right wrist. Slight wear to gilt of the base. Bagpipe player: small chips to paint on the back of the base. Very slight general wear to back of tree trunk & a small chip to the top of the back of the trunk. Nibbles around the edge of the base incl. approx. 0.5cm nick. Light wear to the paint on the leg. Monkey with drums on back: lacking tasselled end to the straps held in the monkey's hands, having been painted over. Crazing to base. Drumsticks: no apparent restoration, historic damage, hairlines or significant wear. Flautist: Chip to one of the paste flowers on the base. A spot repainted to jacket visible under UV light, similarly to left foot but no visible breakage. French Horn player: no apparent restoration, historic damage, hairlines or significant wear. Guitarist: repair to the guitar neck around the middle peg, with pegs showing similar restoration under UV light. Harpist: nibbles to the edge of her bonnet. Hurdy gurdy player: slight patch of unglazed ceramic to underside of skirt; evidence of having been repainted in places. First singer, seated with small book on lap & arms outstretched: nibbles to the edge of her bonnet & similarly to ruffled cuffs. Firing crack to underside of approx. 2cm, visible from the side approx. 0.5cm. Second singer, seated with book in lap: repair to foot - this having been historically glued, with residue of glue & repainting surrounding. Her thumb having been visibly repainted similarly, apparent under UV light. Third singer, book in hand: general wear to paint in places. Oboeist: some stuck residue to verso of tree trunk. Gilding having been restored. Pianist: some possible repainting to the body of the monkey beneath the piano. Pipe player: some possible repainting to the jacket. Triangle player: minor losses to the brown handle of the triangle; some repainting to the underside of the collar. Trumpet player: trumpet showing signs of paint restoration. Violinist: small burst bubble to end of the coat, chip to base of approx. 0.5cm. Light graze to the paint on the knee.

A maritime Dutch East India Company V.O.C. (Vereenigde Oost-indische Compagnie ) silver ingot bar 1739. The silver ingot was salvaged from the shipwreck of the Rooswijk in 2004. The ingot having V.O.C conjoined stamp with A for Amsterdam, together with assay masters stamp of a rampant goat. Measures approx. 3.3cm x 6.8cm x 3.8cm. Weight approx. 1270grms, 45.0 oz, 0.00124994 dwt. Salvage tag number: RK04A0310 Notes: The Rooswijk, a VOC (Vereenigde Oost-indische Compagnie) ship was built in 1737. The Rooswijk sank on the second trip. On the 9th January 1740, whilst on a voyage from Texel (in the Netherlands) to Batavia it faced a storm that left no survivors. There were 237 crew members, and an unknown number of passengers that lost their lives and many chests full of coins and silver ingots that sank to the bottom of the water. The Rooswijk sank on the Goodwin sands off the coast of Kent, a notoriously treacherous stretch of water, where the sands constantly shift with the tides making them hard to navigate. Many ships have been wrecked there. In January 1740, a chest full of letters and the crew’s personal effects washed ashore. The English government realised that the ship had sunk to the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Kent. These letters were the last words written before the Rooswijk sank. In December 2004, the sands that had swallowed the wreck of the Rooswijk changed in such a way that they allowed amateur diver Ken Welling to find the treasure of the Rooswijk. The recovery was made public in 2005. Organised by the Dutch and British governments and the scientific expedition was led by Rex Cowan.The cargo was primarily in the form of silver ingots and “coins of eight,” Mexican Reales from the 1720s and 1730s. The Dutch had little to offer in Asia but silver and gold. Therefore VOC ships had to sail to Asia with silver bars and gold coins to pay for Asian goods. The bars were cast in private factories, run by assayers, from melted-down silver coins, mainly Spanish American “Reales”. Once in Asia, these bars were melted down again and minted into coins and silver objects that could be used to pay for purchases in the East. Some of the dive team were given silver ingots salvaged from the wreckage as payment for their work.
