Former Bristol Zoo Gardens - an original Victorian 19th century bench, from the former Bristol Zoo Gardens, Clifton. Cast iron ends and central support, slatted seat and backrest. Benches were a feature at the former Bristol Zoo Gardens from when they first opened in July 1836 until the year they closed, 2022. Maker's marks impressed to one end (J. Gill of Clifton). Measures approx: 89cm x 242cm x 55cm. Benches were a feature at the former Bristol Zoo Gardens from when they first opened in July 1836 until the year they closed, 2022. The first benches made were of wooden construction, and these cast iron ones followed a little later c1850 to c1880, and remained there until the site’s closure. This style of bench can begin to be seen in photographs and postcards as early as 1900, and most famously graced the Zoo’s Top Terrace, overlooking the West and Main Lawns, although throughout their lifetime they were placed at various locations within The Zoo.
